800 Pound Gorilla (an independent production company that specializes in stand-up comedy video specials) is going into streaming. Their own streamer, Gorilla Comedy+, will be an ad-free premium service with over 250 feature-exclusive stand-up comedy specials. Gorilla Comedy +’s slate includes specials from Patton Oswalt, Sal Vulcano, Emmy Blotnick, and Jourdain Fisher. It will be priced at $9.99 per month.
Sister Group acquires the U.K.‘s After Party Studios (production company behind Channel 4.0’s reality show Don’t Get Catfished). Elisabeth Murdoch – daughter of Rupert Murdoch – and her company, Sister Group, have been growing their transatlantic presence into digital media, online content, and branded entertainment.
South Korea’s film, TV, and streaming industries generated $17.1bn in the country’s GDP last year. This is a tremendous growth compared to the industry’s numbers in the pre-pandemic era, when it contributed roughly $11bn to GDP in 2019. This marks nearly a 60% growth in the East Asian entertainment industry over the last 6 years. South Korean cinema and culture have become integrated into the Western mainstream media, with works like Squid Game and Parasite (2019).
OGM Pictures (Turkish production company) and Grupo Ganga (Spanish production company) partner up. The two companies will develop scripted projects for both of their countries.
