AI's Warlord
You may have forgotten about director Shekhar Kapur. His sweet spot was period pieces in the late 90s/early 2000s:
Elizabeth (1998)
Cast: Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush
Paramount Pictures’ The Four Feathers (2002)
Cast: Heath Ledger, Wes Bentley, Kate Hudson
Universal’s Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)
Cast: Cate Blanchett
He’s been off radar pretty much ever since there, popping up in 2022 for What's Love Got to Do with It? (2022) co-starring Lily James and Emma Thompson.
Now he’s directed an international sci-fi series entirely made with GenAI, Warlord.
Synopsis:
An interdimensional warrior who must protect mystical crystals that power an entire galaxy and appears indestructible because his lover in another dimension pulls him to safety whenever he faces mortal danger.
That synopsis is fairly sweeping, epic and incoherent, as is the teaser trailer, which looks like a video game with great graphics.
As for the use of AI, I don’t mind the use case so much, the storyline has ethereal characters so GenAI doesn’t need to be stretched to create realistic-looking people (currently it’s biggest problem).
Will be curious where this goes. E.g., who is the intended audience if it’s anime lovers, that makes sense, if it’s animation lovers e.g. Disney,+ check out what the crisp precision of Marvel’s Wakanda Forever animated series from a longtime storyboard artist (trailer).
