Amazon MGM. Hulu. Welle.
Amazon MGM is developing an adult animated series based on the hit comic book Monstress from producer Steven Maeda, the former showrunner of Netflix’s One Piece. Set in an Asian-influenced, fantasy world, Monstress follows a young woman battling a literal monster living inside of her.
While Maeda has an extensive background writing for TV on shows like Lost and The X-Files, he will be working in animation for the first time with Monstress, also penning this series. Amazon seems like a good home, given the consistent success of its adult animated superhero series Invincible.
Hulu is lassoing for love with a series adaptation of YA romance novel This Ain’t Our First Rodeo by What She Missed author Liara Tamani. Set at the famous Houston rodeo, the southern romance follows two people who reunite three years after a dreamy date for a second chance at love. The acquisition comes a day after Hulu obtained the rights to YA novel Capsized, also being developed into a series.
Cathy Schulman’s (The Idea of You) Welle Entertainment is developing a feature adaptation of Layne Fargo’s The Favorites. The original book follows the lives of ice dancers in their decade-long history, full of ambition and personal trauma.
Schulman previously produced Crash (2004), a film that deals with similar themes of grief and trauma in the aftermath of 9/11, and we are excited to see what depths of human emotion she will be able to reach with this new project. Kate Gersten (The Last Showgirl) will write the screenplay.
Christopher Pike’s YA novel Remember Me is getting a film adaptation from Tubi. The film will follow a young ghost out to solve her own murder mystery before the Grim Reaper gets to her first. Brec Bassinger (Final Destination Bloodlines) and Charlie Gillespie (Sidelined 2: Intercepted) will star.
