With nothing but great reviews from its screening at TIFF, two standout comedic actors in Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson, leading the cast, and a trailer that’s both off-putting and intriguing, Friendship has become one of my most anticipated 2025 films.
TV writer and director Andrew DeYoung has directed multiple episodes of Hulu shows PEN15 (2019-21), High Fidelity (2020), Dave (2020-), and the HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death (2022-23), making Friendship his feature-length directorial debut.
Official Logline:
When new neighbor Brian (Rudd) threatens his quiet life, Craig Waterman (Robinson) struggles to protect his family’s security.
Like Robinson’s successful sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave (2019-23), DeYoung’s sketch comedy short Would It Kill you to Laugh? (2022, trailer) was Emmy nominated and currently living on Peacock.
The rising director has a background almost exclusively in comedy, and while his new trailer has an unsettling undertone, which A24 does so well, the concept is objectively funny, so it’ll be interesting to see how DeYoung balances the hilarity with the looming absurdity in Friendship when it hits theaters on March 9th.
