John August - Scriptnotes Event: How to Build and Sustain a Screenwriting Career
Hi Folks,
We are excited to announce that, in collaboration with John August, The Industry is hosting a FREE virtual live event on how to build and sustain a lasting screenwriting career.
If you have a friend who may be interested, you’re welcome to invite them: https://theindustry.com/john-august-workshop
For early-stage screenwriters, John will share his strategies for launching a screenwriting career from scratch, getting feedback from the right people, and the do’s and don’ts of pitching scripts.
For those looking to improve their craft, John will tackle his trick for writing great scenes, how he creates strong characters, and whether your script is fit to be a movie.
For more seasoned screenwriters, John will discuss how to sustain a career, from tips for writers’ assistants to jumping from indie films to studio projects. He’ll even dive into the future of the screenplay form and what AI means for the industry.
John is a rare screenwriter who has worked across nearly every corner of the industry. He is the co-chair of the 2026 WGA negotiating committee, and the host and founder of the popular Scriptnotes podcast, which he co-hosts with writer Craig Mazin (Chernobyl, The Last of Us).
He is also an accomplished screenwriter and filmmaker whose credits include indies, studio films, animation, adaptation, and billion-dollar franchise filmmaking:
Aladdin (2019)
Frankenweenie (2012)
Dir: Tim Burton
Corpse Bride (2005)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Big Fish (2003)
Charlie’s Angels (2000)
Go (1999)
Doug Liman’s second film
In this exclusive virtual live event, John will share practical lessons on the craft and business of screenwriting, both from his own experience and also from his new book, Scriptnotes, which collects interviews he’s held with the top voices in the film industry, including Christopher Nolan, Greta Gerwig, David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, Rian Johnson, Daniels, Seth Rogen, and more.
Drawing on those conversations and on his own career, John will dig into the questions that matter to working and emerging screenwriters.
The event will include a Q&A.
Please note: this workshop is likely to be super popular, and there are limited places.
