THE INDUSTRY NEWS
Inside Out 2 brings new emotions to the 2024 Box Office with a joyous $155M domestic debut weekend.
Here’s the breakdown:
Inside Out 2 (Pixar)
$155 M domestic
$295 M Global
$200 M budget + $100 M+ marketing spend
2nd highest Pixar opening of all time (behind Incredibles 2)
Biggest opening film of 2024 (Dune 2 opened at $82.5 M)
Inside Out 2 crushed expectations and topped Inside Out 1’s (2015) box office opening of $90 M. Inside Out 1 ended with a $859 M global theatrical gross, which the sequel should easily surpass.
We believe the film mainlined the nostalgia of Inside Out 1, which beautifully revealed the core drivers of our emotions while also progressing the story logically by showcasing the next stage of the lead character's life: puberty.
Toy Story 3 also tapped into a similar storyline of maturation, with Andy going to college and (accidentally) abandoning his toys. And the box office responded with a $110 M opening and $1 bn total gross (over 2x Toy Story 2).
Where Pixar has fallen down recently is with unmotivated spinoffs like the Toy Story prequel Lightyear (2022), which performed poorly at the Box Office and relatively poorly critically.
Inside Out 2 represents a great comeback for Pixar. And a great step in the right direction for the box office, which is down 24% for the year.
Here's the trailer for Inside Out 2.
Universal’s Rules of Engagement. Universal has acquired the rights for Rules of Engagement by NY Times bestselling author and Georgia politician Stacey Abrams.
