What are we gonna do about Abby?
Last of Us Season 3 plans are a massive misstep, but the damage is already done.
The character of Abby from The Last of Us has always been a divisive character for many reasons, some completely out of line, some justified, and even written that way.
It is worth noting that her actor in the show, Kaitlyn Dever, is doing a great job, she has a born leadership quality and an icy wisdom that is alluring.
But with season 3 switching to get her perspective, fans are already nervous, especially after season 2.
Due to her place as an antagonist turned deuteragonist, there was always going to be friction, but a narrative choice has sort of taken away the power of discovery. Slight video game spoilers (and I am going to try and keep major spoilers out of this)…
The pacing of the show did not follow the deft decision of the video game to switch between character perspectives; instead, we got season 2 Ellie's perspective, and now season 3 will be from Abby's point of view.
This is just the wrong way to tell the story; the beauty of the game was in setting up characters from one side as friends only to be enemies with a shift in perspective.
Overall, it's a weaker story, but we hope game creator Druckman and showrunner Craig Maizen (creator of Chernobyl) and HBO will come up with a unique solution to keep us interested.
