I sat down with Andrij Parekh, who is the DP on Roofman, the latest film from Derek Cianfrance starring Kirsten Dunst and Channing Tatum.
He also DP’d one of my favorite films of modern times, Blue Valentine (2010).
His other DP credits include three films for Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, including:
Half Nelson (2006)
Sugar (2008)
Mississippi Grind (2015)
He also DP’d Cold Souls (2009) and DP’d and directed a few episodes of Succession.
His camera work across all his projects respects the actor’s process by removing bulky lights from the set's interior.
Parekh stated:
“I really saw how that changed what an actor could do, what the camera could do. Suddenly you could pan 270 in the room instead of 90 degrees in a room, you know, and it just allowed for a lot more freedom for actors and for performance.”
In our interview, he details how, with each film, he tries to punch through the screen and capture the essence of the actor.
Here is the Roofman trailer:
Coming to VOD next week.
